GILDED BAS-RELIEF
"Bas-relief is artwork that is sculpted, carved or molded in such a way that it barely protrudes from its flat background surface.  Aztecs and Africans created bas-reliefs by tooling gold sheets over wooden sculpture.  Most of this goldsmithing was stolen and melted down by European conquerors; only small amounts of it are now left for us to view in museums.  Love of the beauty of gold has prompted me to carry this traditional medium into the 21st Century by creating bas-reliefs with 23K gold leaf on embossed metal. And in doing this, I have created a modern medium that has the stunning beauty of gold at far less of a price."   Phyllis Parun
